Nick Maya is an Environmental Health Scientist at Intrinsik Corp. with over 9 years of experience in the areas of toxicology and human health and ecological risk assessment.  Nick is the technical lead for excess soil management projects and has experience conducting risk assessments, including the derivation of site-specific excess soil quality standards using the MECP’s Beneficial Reuse Assessment Tool (BRAT) and consideration of site-specific information, in compliance with the On-Site and Excess Soil Management Regulation (O. Reg. 406/19) and related guidance.  Nick also has extensive experience conducting contaminated sites risk assessments in Ontario in compliance with Ontario Regulation 153/04 (O. Reg. 153/04, as amended) and in a non-regulatory environment (e.g., due diligence risk assessments) as well as vapour intrusion assessments and the development of site-specific guidelines.  Nick has also completed human health and ecological risk assessments for federal contaminated sites and contaminated sites (including former mining sites) in eastern Canada following the Atlantic Risk Based Corrective Action (RBCA) and federal guidance as well as weight of evidence approaches.

Having extensive experience in risk assessment, aquatic toxicology and pharmaceutical development, Nick is also the technical lead for environmental risk assessments for pharmaceuticals requiring new marketing authorisation applications (MAAs) in the EU.  Additionally, Nick prepares human health and ecological toxicology reviews and aquatic toxicity assessments.

Prior to joining Intrinsik, Nick managed and participated in multiple environmental toxicology research projects, including the evaluation of wastewater treatment by ozonation for the reduction of toxicity of contaminants of emerging concern to fish; the research and development of soil toxicology test methods using invertebrate test species for the assessment of toxic substances present in soil; and environmental effects monitoring for the assessment of potential toxic effects of oil sands related compounds to fish.

Experience Highlights

  • Conducted numerous contaminated site risk assessments accepted under Ontario Regulation 153/04 to facilitate the redevelopment of properties for commercial, industrial, community, parkland, and residential use.
  • Technical lead for excess soil projects in Ontario, and environmental risk assessments for pharmaceuticals requiring MAAs in the EU.
  • Conducted multiple risk assessments for excess soil projects under Ontario Regulation 406/19.
  • Provides peer review services for other consulting firms and industry.
