Karen Phillipps is a Senior Scientist with Intrinsik Corp., and has over 16 years of experience in toxicology and risk assessment consulting in Ontario and Western Canada.  Her work has included the evaluation of potential health effects associated with air toxics, metals, accidental releases of crude oil, bitumen and produced water, hydrogen sulphide, hydrocarbons and metals.  As a Board Certified toxicologist, Karen has completed numerous scientific literature reviews on behalf of both industry and government, and has participated in the development of toxicity reference values.  She also has experience in exposure modelling, contaminated site risk assessment, occupational exposure investigations, livestock and ecological risk assessment, and stakeholder consultation.

Experience Highlights

  • Served as the assistant Project Manager/Technical lead on a comprehensive, multi-year project evaluating the potential human health risks associated with oil and gas activity in northeastern British Columbia for the British Columbia Ministry of Health.
  • Actively involved in the project management and technical completion of several Environmental Impact Assessments for proposed in situ and mining projects in the Athabasca oil sands region.
  • Led several human health risk assessments related to municipal wastewater in Alberta, and has been actively engaged in stakeholder consultation, interacting with regulators, exposure modelling and report preparation.

  • M.Sc., Food Safety and Quality Assurance, Toxicology, University of Guelph
  • B.Sc. (Hon) in Biomedical Toxicology, University of Guelph
  • ERT, European Registered Toxicologist
